Creating a Personal Code of Ethics

Creating a Personal Code of Ethics

Personal Code of Ethics

When I was studying at Columbus State University a Business Law Professor of mine had us create a Personal Code of Ethics using a self-reflective and thought provoking exercise. I loved this assignment so much that I wanted to share it here for your use (with permission). I have also shared the result and living document that I use to remind myself of this exercise.

The Assignment

This assignment is designed to guide you through an examination and expression of your own beliefs and value systems. In the final installment, you will be asked to synthesize your morals into a personal code of ethics that may govern your interactions with others in your personal and professional relationships. There are no right or wrong answers to this assignment.

Complete the following exercises as a means of examining your own ethical belief system.

  1. Who am I? Write at least ten statements beginning “I am...”

  2. What do I value? Write at least ten statements beginning “I value...because...”

  3. What do I believe? Write at least ten statements beginning “I believe that...”

  4. What has experience taught me? Write at least ten statements beginning “I have learned that...”

  5. What are my expectations for others? Write at least ten statements beginning “In my interactions with others, I expect them to...”

  6. What inspires me? List at least five quotes that inspire/guide you and their sources.

You can then use this information to build a written code of ethics or as benchmarks and reminders throughout the day.
